The likely contentious question over who will inherit Tom Benson's estimated $3 billion fortune -- including the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans, his most high-profile and publicly beloved assets -- will be a key issue in the wake of Benson's death at the age of 90. Benson, who died Thursday (March 15), had said he intended to leave the teams to his wife, Gayle Benson.
But a long-running family fight over Benson's empire, including the Saints and Pelicans, could reignite in the settling of his estate in court in New Orleans. Details of how Benson decided to pass on his estate, and whether his estranged heirs would challenge the validity of his will, have yet come to light.
The uncertainty goes back to a surprise announcement Benson made in January 2015. Then 87, Benson said he had disowned his granddaughter Rita LeBlanc -- the heir-apparent to the Saints who had been groomed since childhood to one day lead the team -- along with her brother Ryan LeBlanc and their mother Renee Benson, Tom Benson's only surviving child. Benson said in cutting ties with his would-be heirs, he was instead leaving his teams, auto dealerships, real estate and bank holdings to his third wife, Gayle Benson, whom he married in 2004. Benson said the switch was intended to "ensure the long-term stability and success" of the sports franchises and his other interests.
Documents later revealed in court included a 149-word letter Benson had sent to Renee, Rita and Ryan, stating that since he married Gayle, they had become "offensive" and "did not act in an appropriate manner," creating an unpleasant family and causing him "heartbreak."
Renee, Rita and Ryan - the "Three R's" as some people called them - responded by filing a lawsuit in Civil District Court in New Orleans claiming that Benson was mentally and physically unfit to manage his own affairs.

Most of the Choest families businesses are related to the offshore supply boat business or support of those boats.
The boats are worth about 10% of what they were worth 3 years ago. Most of the boats are moth balled and will be sold for scrap. None of the ship/boat builders have any significant contracts.
I know a few families in Louisiana that own privately held companies and know that their net worth is in the Billions. They also don’t disclose their worth and combined couldn’t buy an NFL franchise.
I’m not sure what one of the Choest family members are worth much less the entire family. BUT I have a hard time believing that combined they could buy an NFL franchise.

Of course your typical New Orleanian would never believe that someone from Galliano could be richer than one of their own

I've fished Cutoff and Galiano many time. Been inside ECO headquarters. Been on one of their boats (Laney Chouest, maybe?). Also do offshore design so I see them a lot.
Tell me, how rich is Gary Chouest?

How rich is Tom Benson?

Go away.

Ain’t that the truth. If you spread it out further and look at Lafourche Parish’s other big business families which include the Rouses, Bollingers, and other boat barrons, Lafourche parish has a lot of wealthy people.
Of course now some families as they have aged or their children have moved to other areas.

Does anybody have any idea what the intentions of Gayle are? Tom did great things with the Saints, we all know that. With that said, she now owns the Saints. She can do whatever she wants to do with the Saints.
Did Tom tell her not to move the Saints? Does anyone know?

The saints are staying in New Orleans.

Like, based on your feelings, or based on Gayle’s intentions? If based on your feelings, I appreciate your contribution.

She is very involved and plugged into the community. Does a lot of charitable functions and is on a handful of boards that raise a lot of money. She’s not going anywhere.

RIP Mr Benson
He’s a mixed bag, for a hard outlay of $5 million in ‘85 he took the laughingstock NFL franchise and through good management left it as one of the better respected clubs.
At age 78 when Katrina hit, he did try to cut and run. I was at the Saints’ Tiger Stadium game (vs Miami) when the locals got hostile with he and Taglibue after the game when they exited the Suites’ elevator. I was about 30 feet away coming out of the other Suites’ elevator when that happened. It was ugly. I felt badly for him as a 78 year-old old man.
Fast forward 4 years and he’s hoisting a Lombardi in South Florida.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens now.

Tom Benson’s net worth is much bigger than Gary Chouest. That’s easy
Gary’s assets may add up more but he’s got way much more debt and overhead.

Except for the exotic breading and safari operations in Texas and Africa which they bring in millions a year off of.
Problem is there are too many mouths to feed in that family and they all spend like crazy. Dino is the worst of them all

I will never forgive him for trying to steal the Saints away to TX after Katrina. That was a punk arse move Mr. Benson.

The Saints are staying in New Orleans. Any doubt is evidence of pure ignorance.
