The great melt, year 155 and still going strong.
Can we at least be honest about the intent and purpose of these statues? In general, they weren't erected to "remember the folly of our history". Most went up after Reconstruction failed, or in the early 1900s, or in the years after ww2 - all times of societal upheaval where blacks were pushing for equal rights.
The statues were partially about projecting the (white) power structure to former slaves and blacks, as well as to glorify (or deify) the great heroes of the Lost Cause.

Or conversely, as I view it, they were there to honor the fact that we fought an unbelievably horrible Civil War and were re-dedicated to our Union by being respectful of our differences and commemorating our past. I think it was a very WISE olive branch extended by Republican yankees to vanquished Democrat rebels. An understanding of human nature, an acknowledgement that neither side had a monopoly on personal virtue or personal honor. Maturity vs Infantilism.

but chill homie, it's just statue. you'll be ok!
They're digging up and relocating graves of people they have deemed offensive
But, yeah, just the statues, man

So you're a fan of fiction.

You just compared Robert E Lee to Adolph Hitler. That's such a fail on SO many different levels.

Sitting Bull laughs at this shite.

The Confederate Statue in Alexandria, Va., which has stood for 131 years:
Was removed yesterday:
I find this sad.

Just seems weird to have statues of Confederate generals. There is no reason to honor them like that.

You gave them an inch. They will take it a mile, until the only statues and monuments left are those that meet the SJW purity test.

This poster just confirmed what many of us have been saying. It isn't that Lee is a Confederate. It's that he was a slaveholder. Bye bye Jefferson Memorial and Washington Monument and every other tribute to those who had a part in creating this country.

Protest then. Provoke and don't be a puss.

Taking all the Civil War statues down just frees up pedestals to put up statues commemorating people who fought in the Second Civil War.

You want to remove Civil War statues? Sure, I get. However, this is such a simplistic clichè argument but where does it end? Is the “associated with slavery or segregation” the line? We’ve seen calls for Jefferson’s image to be removed. Isn’t the LSU “Tiger” mascot have a history with the Civil War?
It’s just pretty clear that won’t stop.

Why do we have statues up of losers? I like winners.

They should replace it with a statue of an dumpy, middle aged, childless woman.

What the frick are you babbling about?
It was a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the happenings of the day.
Stop interrupting, troglodyte. People are talking.
