It is a very very top notch school but the socialization will leave a lot to be desired. Unless he is Asian. Then he will fit in well.

If he is looking at Texas schools then Trinity and UT Austin are as good as it gets besides Rice.

If he is looking at schools that are “a step up” then I wouldn’t pick rice personally. Duke, or Vandy, or something like that.

Unless he is a big nerd. Then, again, he might fit in and like it.

I doubt anybody in the history of Texas who got into rice has ever decided to go to U of H instead

If he is a normal sports / fun type of dude then he will be miserable. Pick SMU or Bama for the love of God.

Sorry to go against the positivity in this thread.

Really? My oldest son got a full ride to Harvard, Yale, and Notre Dame...yet, for some reason, he really liked UL-L...so...Ragin' Cajuns it was!

If the schools were in the same city it would be different.

I would pick ULL over Houston, too, every time.

Will his schooling be paid for? If not, that's going to cost some

One of my friend's daughter is graduating HS this year and she plans on going to med school. She wanted to go to an out of state school that also has a really good med school. When we talked about it, I think he said it would have cost him $60k a year? I think, that seems to be a lot for semester, but I remember $60k. So she is going to get her bachelors in state and save for med school. I understand med school costing a lot, but a quarter of a million for a bachelors degree is insane.

So I would say, if you are footing the bill you would be paying a lot more for something that has about the same value for much cheaper

but Rice is probably predominantly Asian.

As opposed to, say....

Duke is globally diverse, with about 29% of students being Asian/Pacific Islander, 14% Hispanic/Latino, and 13% Black.

Overrated. Can't all Rice students take all test home under the "honor code". I wouldn't hire a Rice grad ... grades are suspect ... 99% cheat

Rice is even more Asian than that. It’s literally called Rice

Apparently 33%, so a bit more than Duke, but not such that Duke people should be able to poke fun.

Can't tell you much about the university, but if your son likes the outdoors, Hermann Park is really nice and walkable from the university. Also plenty of museums restaurants nearby as well.

I heard that cheer at LSU when we played them in BTR.

Except it was;
What comes out of a Cajun’s arse?”

“Rice!”

Duke is pretty much just as Asian but it’s 49% white. There are more whites than Asians at Duke. It probably doesn’t feel like you are completely surrounded by Asians even if there are a lot.

I would definitely choose Duke, although not for just demographics.

No... It was the original cheer.

We used to play Rice a lot in the 60s and 70s. Maybe even into the 80s.

Go to El Tiempo off of Richmond for the best Mexican food you’ve ever eaten

respectfully, Candente is a much better option. Also on Richmond, further east at Montrose. I believe it got a Michelin nod (although not fancy or expensive). Get the Birria Tacos with bone marrow.

Pinkerton's BBQ is a good choice in town without having to wait in any lines out in the burbs.

Check out Armadillo Palace to see if there will be any live music. Its a fun BBQ and music venue with a giant two story disco ball Armadillo out front. Its very laid back, tickets range from free-$20. Its never crowded. Get a spicy margarita with Ancho Reyes.

ZaZa is the closest hotel nearby if your budget allows. It has a lovely rooftop pool and view of the city. Free shuttles anywhere within 2 miles (which Rice U is, as well as Rice Village)

Its a lovely, safe, and walkable area. Congrats, you must have a smart kid!
