I hate them. The majority of resumes we receive use that or a similar template.
To the OP, some advice (take it or leave it), minimize your scholastic achievements and maximize your work accomplishments. Many resumes we receive will start with their educational background and then rattle off every scholastic award/achievement they received. For me, work history and experience will always trumps scholastic achievements.

Your resume should be, at a minimum, 4 pages.

Although it was a long time ago and this is at the very end of my resume, I still put this.
I could see taking off the applied physics and second discipline lines. Think the thesis title should go as well?

In my HR opinion, You can keep it as long as the overall length of the resume does not exceed two pages. Once you have a few solid years of experience, education info should move to the bottom of the resume.
And about that old job from 2000 or 2002, if it's relevant, then keep it. If it's waiting tables while you were in college, ditch it.
The "objective" statement has gone by the wayside in favor of a professional summary of about 3-5 sentences.
Definitely list experience by company and add any relevant projects you worked on at each company.
The poster that mentioned using key words from the job posting in your resume is absolutely correct. Big companies have resume readers that look for key words to help them sort through thousands of resumes. There is a website called jobscan. com that will compare your resume to a job posting and let you know how much it "matches". Might want to check that out if it's a position you really want.

Well I am looking for a mid-career position. Does the fact that I consider my graduate degree to be an applied physics degree have any relevance? Does anyone know what a second discipline in physics mean for my undergrad, and does it matter? If I have to pair it down, I'd rather lose that information over my 2000-2002 project engineer position at UL.

It helps to use a tasteful amount of clipart, maybe like as bullet points for each past employer. Will generate a lot of heat in engineering HR, they love postscript.

I was just kidding you - I am old and late 90s and early 2000s aren't "long ago" in my eyes.
I actually think the details of your thesis and whatnot, trapped between the listing of the two degrees does not help and probably detracts. Would probably remove and stack the two degrees right on top of each other, with only a space separating.
