Possible failed suicide attempt that ended up being a convenient cover?
No idea what kind of evidence this guy has but people have been found to have shot themselves to try cover up crimes in other cases.

Awfully convenient. Without any eyewitnesses, it’s easy to interpret the vagaries and nuances of what happened and arrive at the desired conclusion. Politically motivated confirmation bias. Even 58 years later, some people just don’t like the attention he received back then.
