Had mine replaced a short while back. Cost me about $1K. I told them not to bring one out here from Lowes. They went to Coburn’s and got a Rheem.
No soldered connections on it. They used plastic pipe with compression rings.

Spoke to my plumber today. He said the Rheem units at Home Depot are good. Stay away from Lowes.
Gas 40 gallon = $409
50 gallon = $514
I suspect total with installation would be $1000-1200 from local plumber. Mine just charges me a couple of hundred for install.
He said the ones at the supply house are a little better and little more costly.

I had my gas one replaced about two years ago. Got a Bradford White, the plumber spoke of it highly (of course). Do any of you know that name?
He replaced the pressure release valve setup. The home inspector guy warned me about the valve about 8 years ago. Total cost was a $1K.

you looking at roughly $400-$450 just for the heater plus labor (2 people) and materials ($20-$50) and hauling off the old one is a big job, them old suckers are heavy as shite and can weight 200 pounds.

Just replaced one in my gf's home yesterday. Got a Rheem 40 gallon from Home Depot for $378. Her's is electric, so I'm sure gas is more complicated. Bought the needed pvc and spent about $400 total. Hardest part was picking it up by myself and getting it in place.

I like to have a shut off valve and then flexible braided steel or bendable copper lines to it.

Gas or electric? Gas just cost me about 900. PITA due to having get a permit and have it inspected by the parish. You probably won’t have to do that silly shite. Mine was in a rent house and the city wouldn’t turn gas on without an indpection
