a drum of r22 is in the 700 range. I'd imagine 80-100 per pound.

Nope...and if your unit is leaking very much at all, prepare to have a couple of thousand bucks worth of work done to get the leak stopped. If the unit is very old, you will probably want to go ahead and replace it.

You can buy all you want on ebay but

YOU MUST SEND A STATEMENT WITH YOUR FULL LEGAL NAME STATING YOU INTEND TO RE-SELL THE REFRIGERANT TO A CERTIFIED PERSON

Ebay R22 30Lb

How do you know you're low on freon?

It’s about 2 years old, so fairly new. This is the first time we’ve had to service it. I don’t think it should have a leak, just routine service I think

Because the rods that run from the unit into the house should be much much colder than they are.

The freon is in a sealed system. If some is missing it leaked.

At 2 years you shouldn't need just a routine service. Spray some soapy water on the brazings at the condenser, evaporater, and any other easily accessible joints. Report back.

Only one should be cold (suction line....the larger insulated copper tubing.) The discharge line should be hot. You had it serviced and they didn't fix the issue? Couldn't find the leak or not a repairable leak?

no sir....Freon does not get used up...if it is low, you have a leak. a 2 year old unit may have had a very slow leak from the start. I would check with whomever you had install it to see if there is any residual warranty, etc. Honestly, that leak should be pretty easy to find.

ETA: if it is that new, the unit also probably does not contain R22, so it should be feasible to allow a refill every few years.

I haven’t had it serviced yet. This is the first issue we’ve had with it. Bought it new a couple years back with the house.

*If* you can get ahold of a gauge manifold you can tell us the pressures. Blue (left side) goes to the larger diameter pipe. Red (right side) goes to the high pressure smaller diameter pipe.

Disclaimer*

If you frick up it's not my fault.

Haha thanks for the info.

I’m honestly out of my wheelhouse on this stuff. I’ll probably just have to bite the bullet and just have the hvac guy come out and tell me what a dumbass I am...

If you could look on your condenser for an info plate that states the refridgerant type that would help out alot.

Ah...ok. Probably one of two things...low on refrigerant (leak) or a restriction at the txv. Hard to know without gauges on the unit.

This and if you had a "complete" system installed only two years ago then you're probably R410a.

All you really have to do is steal a green bottle and charging hoses. Run the unit and charge the high side to 70 and the low side to 40 or so. Pretty basic.

One Hour Air Conditioning has been running a documentary about a guy named Bubba and all the Youtube videos he watched. It ends with a puff of smoke (escaping freon) and Bubba hightailing it out of there, all

If your AC is low on refrigerant, you probably have a leak. Refrigerant never runs low from usage. If you have a leak and were to refill it, it will only be a short term fix.
