I hate fricking Dodges and opted to trade it. I bought a valve conditioner oil additive and it temporarily solved the problem. It worked long enough to trade it in on a Tacoma

I sure hope you told the dealer that, who gave you $ for a truck they now have to sink $ into or give to a customer who may be stuck in your POS you decided not to fix correctly. (hope your not one of those guys that complained about trade value and got every dollar you could because your bad purchase decision)

I have a 08 Chevy Suburban with the 5.3 engine. The engine went out 3 years ago and we replaced with a Jasper. I have put about 60.000 miles on it and it runs as good as new. To make sure the warranty is good, you can't have more than 3000 miles between oil changes. My experience with Jasper engine has been good.

Also I'm curious of how a camshaft suddenly "goes bad"

Cam shaft? It got exposed to the pressure of a Super Bowl.

Sad, you may not care to do the dealer like that (since apparently dealership is hell on earth to some), but the next customer may be someone that does not have the $ to sink into your POS you turned in. You should have at least told dealer, at least after deal was signed

I have also seen this happen in cases where a vehicle had a oil pressure based chain tensioner...1994 Nissan sentra. It had a ton of miles and Low oil pressure. The timing chain tensioner didn't keep enough tension and the chain kept "jumping time". It ran like hell but it ran.

I'll bet 10 dollars the valves are stuck open. For the cam to "wipe a lobe" should take a long time. If this happens you'll have a ton of metal in the oil pan at each oil change. I don't think this is happening. I'd pull the vacuum hose off of the brake booster and trickle in a can of seafoam While its at about 1200-1500. Rpm. If it rus better it's stuck valves.

Also if you have a pushrod engine, you can just pull a valve cover and watch your rocker arms to see if your cam is good. For that matter you can see if your valves are stuck too.

What exactly is bad about the camshaft here? 5.7's use the same technology pretty much all big OEMs are using these days which is press fitting PM forged cam lobes on to a hollow shaft. Unless one of the cam lobes spun out of place on the shaft then not much can go wrong with them. Those 5.7s were notorious for having problems with the toner ring at the crank snout breaking and losing crankshaft position reading. You also have a ECM controlled cam phaser that could be the problem and is a much cheaper fix.

What motor? 5.7? That's a very unusual failure. The 5.7 is a stout platform. You need to talk to FCA and the dealer some more. Should just be a camshaft replacement. If the dealer won't help, look on some online forums...someone in your area will help replace it for you for cheap. An OEM camshaft is probably only a couple of hundred.

Yes it's the 5.7.
I've took it to several shops, both independent mechanics and dealers. All say the same thing.
The intake lobe is worn on the number 3 cylinder. Slowly happened over a period of time. Engine light would come on would I would pass a car. Then would go off. One day it came on and stayed on. Ran code and it said cylinder 3 misfire. Changed the coil and plugs. Light stayed on and still missing. That's when I started taking to shops to figure out what was going on. Thought the first guy was trying to get over on me which led to taking elsewhere. Same thing from everywhere.
It's hard to find anyone that wants to do internal engine work. The dealer quoted me 5500 to change the cam. Yea don't think so lol. 9500 to change engine. The truck has 125k miles on it. So I figured I'd look into replacing the whole thing.

Or like yall said, the truck could dissappear and I could get a new one.....any suggestions?

Find a street that floods. Watch the weather a then park it there. Hell, just wait for a flood and drive it in there.

Jasper engines are solid. Not only do they build them but they try to upgrade certain parts that are common problems for engines that come from the manufacturer. I sold plenty of Jasper engines and have had plenty of happy customers. Solid company building solid engines with a lot of thought going in to doing it right .

I had a fuel pump go out on my truck but the dealership only charged me $15k to swap out the engine and they even changed the headlight oil for free.

125,000 on a 3 year old truck is a lot. Regardless, it's an uncommon issue with that motor I assure you. Go on lxforums or Dodgetalk.com and put out a feeler for people to help. I promise someone in the area would be willing to help you for a couple hundred bucks and a case of beer so long as you supply the parts and what not. Cam swaps aren't that hard on the 5.7. This is all assuming it's a cam only issue. If it messed anything else up it'll get more costly.

I got a Jasper in my truck about a month ago. Have an 05 F150 that was having some Cam Phaser issues. The engine they sent has the issues caused in my 05

Go to K&M Automotive if you are in BR area. Jason is a great dude and gave me a really good deal compared to other guys in the area. I have the 3 yr / 100k warranty as well.

My Dodge truck was barely out of warranty when my transmission started acting up. I called Chysler main office and they helped me out considerably. Local dodge dealer made repair at warranty price. (Way cheaper than the rates they charge normally) Chrysler paid half and I paid the other half on parts and labor. Generous on their part.

They may not do anything for you, but worth a shot.
