Comedians still put out audio specials, they just aren't CDs. I listened to Doug Stanhope's latest one the other day on AMAZON Music.

It is still cheaper for a comedian, particularly one without a large following, to record and edit audio only. Keep in mind, that most specials, video or audio-only, are not pulled from one show on one night. Most comedians schedule at least 3 shows at the venue where they will be recording. They will record all three shows. That's multiple cameras working for 3+ hours. They will choose the best show, then edit in/out parts of the other two shows if they get better laughs or something they didn't like happened. That shooting and editing costs much more money than doing the same thing with only audio. Of course, lesser known comedians will record their own audio, and will do alot of their own editing. Sometimes, they will even release an entire show with no bits cut or edited. That doesn't happen very often, though.
