Given the somberness that will forever surround 9/11, combined with the tragic events of yesterday, I found the daily Gospel reading set for today to be quite fitting. They are hard words, but the words of Our Lord. Words more people should hear.

Thursday of the Twenty-third Week in Ordinary Time
Luke 6:27–38

But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.

If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again.

Do to others as you would have them do to you. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.

If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again.

But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.

St Paul’s words in today’s first reading in the lectionary are equally poignant:

Colossians 3:12-17
Brothers and sisters:
Put on, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved,
heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,
bearing with one another and forgiving one another,
if one has a grievance against another;
as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do.
And over all these put on love,
that is, the bond of perfection.
And let the peace of Christ control your hearts,
the peace into which you were also called in one Body.
And be thankful.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,
as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another,
singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs
with gratitude in your hearts to God.
And whatever you do, in word or in deed,
do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God the Father through him

John 15
18-19

The World Hates the Disciples

18 “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.

9/10 and 9/11 have the common thread of evil testing our resolve and commitment to our values through the murder of innocent people.

Our response to 9/11 was a mixed bag. On one hand, the immediate aftermath of that was the last time I remember our country being truly united in purpose and love for one another. On the other hand, I think we became afraid of the downside risk of our freedoms, and the road to sacrificing several of them started there.

I really hope we do better this time around. I'm not optimistic, but I choose to believe in our better nature anyway.

I cycle through Father Mike’s Bible in a Year every day on the way to work. I am not on the regular schedule since I’m on round two and out of 365 episodes, the one for this morning’s drive just happened to be the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew

I couldn’t help but think how fitting. It always seems to work like that.

I could listen to Fr. Mike read instruction manuals. His voice, to me, is so calming.

Yes, I agree. The scripture always seems to pop up when it is needed most.

Charlie would agree. My heart breaks for his children and wife. This hurts.

Very fitting indeed. And also fitting to remember that the man who said those peaceful, love-filled words in Luke: they arrested him, spit on him, whipped him, placed a crown of thorns on his head, nailed him to a cross and crucified him. Evil in this world has always existed and will exist until He returns to defeat it.
