It’s not stupid. Folks do it all the time.
They sell the connectors on amazon.

The pressure inside a 20lb bottle and a 1lb bottle is the same. The propane will flow into whichever bottle is the coolest once pressured are even.

Why can't people comprehend?

Got a dozen shooting houses and 5 heaters I move around, not going to carry a 20 lb tank around. Some of these shooting houses don't get hunting out of for a couple of years, all depends on the wind, time of day etc.

Car crashes can have fires. Do I think it would be likely…..no. I just decided to spend the extra few $ per year to buy the bottles new. There are DOTD approved refillable 1lb bottles online you can purchase as well. I didn’t use enough to justify doing that either. We used them for sporting events during the winter. Maybe 12 or 13 a year at most.

You do realize hauling a 5 gal can of gas to fill mowers, SxSs, ATVs, etc. is a 1000 times more dangerous?

Everyone saying ideal gas law is forgetting, you’re dealing with a liquid. When you filled it slam full, with the aid of the freezer-induced vacuum, warming back up to room temp caused hydraulic pressure that bulged the bottles. The pressure relief should have vented, but they’re flimsy and don’t work well enough with liquid versus gas. Next time you fill, leave the bottles at room temp, tip your big bottle over such that liquid is flowing, and lift the relief valve a tiny bit with a pair of needlenose until you see it spitting, then stop.

I’m not really worried about it blowing, more the Gubment fining the hell out of me or throwing me in jail for it. No real worry by them about gas hauling, but they sure seemed to worry about these small tanks and how they are transported.
Don’t get lost in the weeds. Definitely not worth saving $25 in my opinion.

Yet another reason I ditched propane and went back to white gas.

I read a tip about putting the 1 lb bottles in the freezer before filing (it enables more propane to enter the bottle - due to temp difference between the two). Be careful if you do this, I filled 5 1 lb bottles getting ready for this upcoming cold snap, 4 of them swelled up so much I had to discard them.

I don't refill the green cannisters that you can get at Walmart. Even though people do refill them, they are not really made for that. I bought a Flame King refillable kit. 3 cannisters with the adaptor for your 20lb. tank. Love it. I just don't have the stand. I just put the tailgate of my truck down and put it on a makeshift stand with an old bath chair that I converted.

Just spend the money and get a hose which will allow you to hook your 20lb bottle to your Mr Buddy heater.

That's what I did. I still refill some I use for my coleman Lantern though.

I have a propane distribution tree LINK and I screw my lantern to the top of it. I use my hose for my bbq or heater.

I don't use the green bottles ever. I can see if space is a concern but usually, imo, there's room for a 20 lb tank. I use a 5 lb tank on my boat for my heater/bbq because space is a concern.

Your mistake was posting this on the OT and not the OB.

POLK COUNTY (WCCO) — One person is dead and another is in the hospital after a garage explosion and fire Saturday, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office says the incident occurred at 657 U.S. Highway 8 in Apple River Township. Stanley Johnson, 81, was inside the garage “actively filling a small 1 lb LP cylinder from a larger 20 lb tank” when the small tank ruptured and ignited the escaping gas.
Johnson’s wife, 77-year-old Nancy Johnson, was in the garage area when the explosion occurred. She was pronounced deceased on scene.
Stanley Johnson was able to escape the garage. He was transported to Amery Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries

There are video examples of 1lb bottles exploding online. Enough to dissuade me from attempting it.

Stay safe folks!
