High carbohydrate diet with emphasis on sugar and especially high fructose corn syrup.

I'm not talking about people who are 20-30 lbs. overweight. I'm talking like 3-400 pounders. WTF is these people's diet like? How does this happen where people get to be 100 lbs.-plus overweight? Are they all just knocking down little debbies all day every day?

We went to Superior Grill a few years ago and sat near a double date. Everyone in the booth was around 40 (I think) and really big.

I couldn't help but notice how much they all ate. It became a novelty to me.

They went through four baskets of chips and two orders of queso. Everyone got a margarita. The women got a second with dinner. The men switched to beer with dinner. They each got some kind of huge combination plate - enchiladas with rice and beans for example.

And they each cleaned their plate.

How many calories was that for each person? 3000? At the least?

Sure, that's okay on a special occasion, but I doubt that was a special occasion for them. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that one of them got McDonald's on the way to work. Hopefully some kind of lighter meal for lunch, but doubtful. Any midday snacks? Any ice cream or dessert later when they got home?

So being really conservative, I would say that each person there was consuming 4000 calories in a day. Did they do that often? Maybe they only ate 3000 calories a day and gained a pound a week.

Maybe it is a pound a week and it started at age 30. Say, hypothetically one of the guys was 5'11, 185 pounds when he turned 30 and then started gaining a pound a week. By age 31, he approaches 197 and starts to worry a bit about his weight. But his desk job at the office is tough, finding time to workout is even tougher, and lord knows no one wants to give up that 4,000 calorie bomb at the Mexican restaurant.

So age 32, he's at 209. Age 33, 221. Age 35, 245.

Age 40, he cracks the 300 pound mark.

Sure, but that doesn't mean that there aren't other factors to obesity that must be considered, particularly when talking about entire populations and not just looking at individuals.

To be dismissive and just say 'stop eating so much, fatty' is a gross oversimplification of a real problem worldwide.

Like many have already mentioned, it can be from numerous causes.

I know there are some people who suffer with obesity because they don't get that full feeling when eating. If you think about it, that is why we eat. We are hungry, we eat, we feel full/satisfied. If you never have that feeling, I can imagine I would overeat too if I never felt full. I feel sorry for people who have to live like this. Plus, they have to live with the constant judgement from others who know nothing about their heath or reason for being overweight. I can imagine it's a tough life to live.

Saw some research a few weeks ago that suggested that when you are a child, your body creates new fat cells but your fat cells stay the same size when you gain weight. As an adult, your body stops producing new fat cells and the fat cells expand to accommodate fat storage. So the idea is people who are obese as children will have many more fat cells to store fat in, they will store fat more easily and a much more difficult time losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight.

I believe this. I was pushing 220 in 8th grade. 8th fricking grade. Through hs, i lost it all and graduated at 190 with little bf. Even now, it's a struggle to know when to stop eating, but I do it. It gets a little easier as you keep up with it, but the urge is always there.

Now im around 170-175 at 5'10 and am pretty skinny. After a two week vacation though, I can visibly see the difference in my body

I eat because I'm unhappy.

And I'm unhappy because I eat.

It's a vicious cycle.

Now if you'll excuse me there's someone I've been meaning to get in touch with.... Myself.

Culture is a small part of it. It's seen as normal to eat three big meals a day regardless of hunger level.

We yell at our kids to finish the food on their plate. And as a reward for overeating and cleaning their plate they are allowed to have some desert.

One reason could be that they are eating a lot of foods containing high fructose corn syrup. It's in almost any type of processed food you can buy.

High amounts of fructose can inhibit the hormone leptin which your body releases to make you feel full.

depends a few factors

living where you can easily get fried food and you never heard of green smoothies.

emotional sexual.

living where getting exercise is more difficult, including especially the combo of a big driving commute and a desk job.

Sitting is the devil.

And pizza, chips, ice cream. you can get pizza, chips and ice cream all over.
try getting a veggie smoothie.

A lot of excellent points in this thread, the best is probably the one of basically inheriting it from fat parents and I don't mean genetically. More is caught than taught. Parents don't care; their kids won't care either. Vicious cycle.

I was at 6 flags yesterday observing all the obese and chubby people, especially the ones standing in line or eating the exact kinds of food that made them fat.

Ultimately, so few people have any shame or self discipline anymore.
