Yep, wood paneled sides and a rear deck with fold-up seats that faced sideways. All four of we kids could sit on the backseat but we always ended up over in the back.

Before the age of soccer mom's hauling kids around in their minivans, they were stuffing them into the backs seats of Vista cruisers, Country Squires, Nomads, Estate Wagons. All fun times even if we were getting choked from the exhaust fumes from the roll down back window.

We had an early 80s Ford Fairlane station wagon when I was really young. Dookie brown, of course.

A family in our car pool had one. We used to jam about 8 kids in a LTD, Caprice, or the like. No fricking car seats or even seat belts.

One mom let her 15 year old son drive while she rode and smoked. Son had a great Beatles 8 track. I looked over the seat one day and saw the needle on 85 mph. Mom was just smoking and chill.

One mom used to get drunk and forget us at school. She got kicked out of the carpool.

When gas started going up, those wagons got dirt cheap. Every Mexican in town was suddenly driving (or pushing) a nice wood sided wagon in about 1982.

I grew up in those things. 67-70, we'd pile 7 kids, Mom and Dad in it and go to Ft. Walton Beach or Gatlinburg or some such. The smell of melting Crayolas still can make me barf.
