I really don't know the distance of a "block" but it seemed like a pretty good walk..

It's about 1000 feet door to door.

We have an Audubon membership, and bring the kids all the time with no problems. The best parking is at the Canal Place shopping center. It's a short walk to either the aquarium or the insectarium. Take the last exit before the bridge "Convention Center", then keep straight. When you hit the Convention Center, take a left. That will bring you right by the Riverwalk mall and straight to Canal Place. You'll have to go around the block, past the hotel to get to the entrance for the parking garage.

It's going to be nuts down there. And more than likely, those places will be closed on Mardi Gras Day.

This story really has no place here, but you just reminded me of it. About a year ago I went to the quarters with a couple buddies. We're all pretty hammered by 6 o clock. We were walking away from bourbon going toward Decatur. Not many folks on the street. We are a block or two from decatur. My buddy pulls out this joint and just starts puffing away while we're walking. Now I'm all for hidden in plain sight etc. But it seems as this was going on there was crowds of people coming against us going toward bourbon. Kids. The whole lot mostly tourists. The looks getting thrown at us were ridiculous.

I doubt much of anything that would interest your kids will be open on mardi gras day.

Consider another trip another time.

You can def. make a nice day of going to city park with the kids. Get beignets and cafe au lait at Morning Call in the park. Then hit let them play around the play ground. After that, 36 holes of a nice mini golf course, mini amusement park, bike or paddle boat rentals, etc.

Yeah, but now he can't afford to take them anywhere.

Probably has to take out a loan to go out to eat.
