I've read an article detailing the situation. One of the differences I noticed was how many jobs ExxonMobil creates vs their exemption when compared to other companies. Companies in other states offer as higher 3000 or more jobs. Compared to this:

The project will provide 600 construction jobs, 45 new employee jobs => $75K – $100K average salaries and 20 full-time contractor jobs.

While the above is a blessing, doesn't it seem like a relatively low number of jobs. I understand some of them are high quality, but it still seems lower that what some northern states or even Texas itself would take.

I know we NEED ITEP. But do you think Louisiana is honestly getting the best deal.

PBS corporate tax exemptions.

Louisiana has been pilfered by oil companies over the last few decades and its own citizens cheered it on while bemoaning corruption

Do you really want to give the idiots that run Louisiana more money to piss away?

I admittedly don't know the answer to your question but I do love that the leftists that bitch about ITEP think that the way to pull people out of poverty is to increase tax revenue to the government

Companies innovate and create, why not allow them to keep more of their money so as to innovate and create more?

That’s for one new unit at the Polyolefins Plant. That seems about right for just one unit or area. 45 permanent jobs is a pretty big deal honestly.

My fault. I was comparing them to places like Amazon. But a large distribution center needs more workers than 1 plant unit.

That's why companies only get profits taxed, right?

Does ITEP hold them to those numbers? Or is it like the IBM deal where they just move the goalposts

Not really.

If he is going to defend their need for tax breaks to allow them to be innovators and creators.

Well they don't have to build here.

ITEP is not a gift of taxes already being collected like film credits. ITEP simply excuses property tax on new property being put into the parish for a period of 10 years.

Frankly we should end ITEP AND the Homestead Exemption and we could then lower tax rates (millages) for everybody.

Wholeheartedly agree.

And I am a homeowner.

I want to see someone defend not raising minimum wage to $15/hr and defend the homestead exemption.

If we ended the homestead exemption and held tax collection the same for one year a lot of homeowners would see their tax bill go down.

We exempt very large dollar amounts of property that if on the rolls would mean millages could be MUCH lower.

I screwed up and didn't file my homestead exemption until early Decemeber. So I had to pay the full amount by Feb 14th and now wait for NOLA to refund the difference.

Honestly not as bad as I thought it would be.

Which would help small business since their property tax would be much lower and they are bigger drivers than the ones receiving ITEP.

It's fascinating to watch people go from claiming the more local a government is, the better to doing a complete 180 by demanding that the state step in and over-rule local tax issues that were passed in fair elections

Well, local can mean different things to different people. Most libertarians advocate for states rights Vs federal.

And let’s be real here: ExxonMobil investing in the area affects the state and BR. It’s not outrageous for some to want the state to step in. Especially when the local governments are mired in petty politics and the NBR reps are looking for ways to “rejuvenate Plank road”

ITEP is a five year tax abatement with the possibility of extending it for another five years. After five years, either party to the contract can choose not to renew. After ten years, the abatement goes away. So, there is a chance for the local taxing authority to decide if they're getting the bang for their bucks that they expect while still giving the company reasonable time to work everything out on their end.
