I have a question and I'm throwing a fishing line out on the various message boards I visit to see if I can get some advice from those who have managed it before. I am currently dissatisfied at my job and I have been looking to change things up for the past year. I am currently an engineer/project manager in the oilfield with about 5 years experience. Currently live in Louisiana but looking to relocate to the Mobile, Al area to be closer to family. The problem is I am having a lot of trouble translating my experience from oilfield to other industries. I have tried several recruiting services and about the only thing they are good for is spamming my email about "IT Opportunities" that are little more than tech support. The last job I applied for through a service, I thought I had a chance to at least put my resume in front of someone but I called the rep I had been in contact with and she said that despite my resume looking fantastic, it would not even make it out of screening because I didn't have industry experience. She said my only chance was going through people I knew to find someone to take a chance on me. I have a BA in engineering (ME) and I just passed the FE back in May. I am looking specifically to move out of the oilfield and into heavy industry or manufacturing. Has anyone here made that kind of jump before? What did you do to make yourself more attractive to employers and get your resume on someones desk? Its frustrating. Thank you in advance for any help or advice.

With your degree and certs you will find something... but in all seriousness, its all about who you know, not what you know. Do you have any friends or family in the industry to get you in the door?

I have a few that I have started working on here recently but I'm one of the first engineers in my family. Parents are currently looking through their phone books to see if they know anyone.

By oilfield you mean upstream? Or out of petrochem as a whole, would downstream be appealing?

I'm actually downstream. At the rotary to be more specific. I would like to move upstream but those tend to be more tailored to chemical or process engineers.

Downstream is refining and marketing... midstream is pipeline and transportation... upstream is typically considered at the wellhead.

I’m not familiar with what opportunities may be available in Mobile, but I recently made a career change out of IT to work in a manufacturing facility.

I had to work as an IT contractor at that facility for a period of time until a position opened up that I was able to interview for due to the connections I made.

If you have an IT background, Id recommend that path.

I'm thinking I may just have to do something similar. Maybe start on the floor and get the experience.

I was wondering the same thing. Never heard of a BA in Engineering.

OP you are going to have use your network of friends and family in Mobile. You will need someone who’s willing to vouch for you. When given the opportunity to interview relate your experience to what is specifically needed for the job.

I would imagine that many of consulting companies in Mobile have clients across several industries in petrochemical and O&G so you shouldn’t have a problem relating your current experience. If you are looking to get on with a chem manufacturer or refinery then you will probably have to go contract through a consultant first. If you turnout to be a good candidate you may get a chance to go direct with the owner company later in your career.
