Are cross-eyed people seeing anything differently than non-cross-eyed people?
If I had to guess then I'd say that other than looking in the mirror they wouldn't even be able to tell that they are crossed. I'd think that the brain compensates when generating the "image" that they see... after all, the image our eyes see and the image our brain shows us are different - our eyes see two different images from two different angles and our brain puts those together for us.
Or am I completely wrong?

Yeah or pick a spot on their forehead.
But I honestly had forgotten that he had a lazy eye because I hadn't seen him in forever and it took me awhile to establish which eye to focus on and get used to the other one rolling around to where it wasn't a distraction. He has it pretty bad.

I'm not cross eyed but here's what I deal with.
I can be looking at things and seeing it fine with my good eye, but if I let it go out of focus and focus on what my dead eye sees, I can see a "ghost image" of everything. Like a translucent copy off to the left. Kind of weird.
I've seen some weird shite in that second sight.
But one cool thing is even if my good eye's view of something is blocked, by say a person, I can still see the image of something like a TV that is now superimposed on top of that persons face a bit.

I had a friend in High School that had a lazy eye, we called it a buck eye. We would all go out drinking and I'll be damned if that fricker would end driving. I was never at ease especially when he would do shots.

Most people with lazy eyes usually take a career path into officiating or umpiring
