Question for OT Exterminators

Now that summer is in full swing I have started to notice a more frequent appearance of insects inside my apartment. This is really only my second summer living in Louisiana so is that a normal thing to happen once the warmer months really hit in earnest? And what's the best way to deal with it? It doesn't really seem like there's enough of anything to call an exterminator so I was wondering if there's anything I can just do myself. Definitely noticing more cockroaches and my girlfriend (no pics) found some caterpillars this morning.
