I struggled with this (still do.)

I coach my child's team (and was kinda drafted into it) because the team needed a second coach and I'm way more knowledgeable about the game than, well, 99% of people.

But it's been tough - and I'm harder on my child than others. But - I'm there to teach the game, so I'm going to teach the game to everyone the best that I can.

I do think they'll develop more when playing for someone else, and I've to put thought and effort into how I approach interaction with my kiddo in that setting.

There would be no rec league sports without parent coaches since 99% of teams are coached by parents.

You've made several statements that kids should play every position in the 8-9 yo range. Also that kids are learning and some "how hard is it to field a ball" comments, etc.

Here's the thing, you're right, it doesn't start with being about winning but it evolves to that. It's about learning. We practice kids in every position. We know we have some that can play in any spot on the field. We also know we have some that we can't put in important spots for whatever reason: they can't field, they can't catch or throw far, etc.

You say it's about having fun and I absolutly agree with that. But you know what's not fun? Getting run ruled every game or losing by 20 in basketball. At some point it is about limiting embarrassment and trying to win using strategy: be it letting the best ball handler bring run the offense, letting the best players play in the import positions, etc.

And then everyone stood up and applauded me and threw rotten produce at the other coach.

This is the dumbest thing I’ve read on this site in a long while. Congrats.

That’s not what I said.
I’m not advocating every kid play shortstop. I’m advocating to give the kids that are normally relegated to outfield only, to be given a chance to play 3rd base every once in a while. If they are decent enough, let them get a chance at 2nd every now and then.
Hell in 8-9 year old range a good center fielder is more important than the 3rd baseman.
I’m not saying bench the best players and let everyone play every position equally. This isn’t the church league.

Yes I know. That’s why the best kid plays shortstop and bats top 3. If you’re getting run ruled it’s b/c the other team is a lot better than yours. Having a kid that isn’t good play 3rd base and right field, and another play left field and 2nd isn’t why you got run ruled.
When I coached my older son in basketball we had 8 on the team. Everyone played the same amount, except for one kid who played the whole game unless we could afford for him to sit b/c we were winning by a good bit.

It’s not hard to be competitive, while also being fair to everyone.

You know what’s not fun, when you’re 9 years old and you play 1 inning in right field, sit 2 innings, and bat last and only get 1 at bat. It’s also not fun to play 1 quarter of basketball and sit the other 3. That kid could give two shits that his team won, and he didn’t have fun.
