If you have enough disposable income to do what you want, what is the appeal of a grimy hipster existence in some city instead of living someplace like Aspen or Key West?

Probably because your parents and their circle of friends were materialistic assholes who cared more about status than loving their kids.

So they are rebelling against materialism.

City life = more socializing.

Not sure about the grimy part.

It's just a fad. They'll be living in luxury condos in NYC in a few years.

They view hardship/marginalization as virtuous. So rather than simply appreciate those that are actually afflicted they want in on the action.

Why do you think the OP posed the question?

It's called "rich guilt" and it is very real. I actually don't know if it is called "rich guilt" but that is what I call it.

This is why your ultra ultra rich people always turn in to a bunch of beta pussies -- mind you, that is not what got them the success in the first place.

When you become a 1%, and you have more than you could ever need or even dream of ---- guilt sets in.

So you invented the question mark, and made trillions of dollars..... but thoughts creep in "are you really special? were you lucky? why do I have all of these things, but others who work so hard have nothing? Why do I deserve all of these things? Did I really work as hard as I think?"

etc etc.

To people without money it is one of, if not, the most important thing in their world.
To people with tons of money, it loses it's value. You begin to realize that TIME, FRIENDS, and FAMILY are far more important. (Not that these aren't important to non-rich).

Now, imagine you are a trust fund brat. You at first don't appreciate anything, but sooner or later, you realize your status. And then the rich guilt hits, and it hits hard. The trust fund brat did not even earn the fortune, there is no hard work and tough times you went through to neutralize this guilt.

So these fricking morons, hit the road, and live the most poor life they can. Until they get bored with it and have daddy's copter come scoop them up.

1) Theres a lot of drugs being consumed.

2) They frequent live shows (multiple nights a week) and a city with music culture is appealing to them.

Experiencing raw life instead of a sheltered existence. That's the appeal.

I’m pretty sure the OP was clearly asking why some people choose to be grimey hippies. Not merely different. Grimey.

Nihilism sets in when you’ve been given everything. Why work? Why try? Why give a frick? Instant gratification kills ones drive to put effort into something for that weird “delayed gratification”

Because they have *different* value systems than others. Are all people from Louisiana this retarded?

As a psychiatrist, I support this message 100%.

One caveat, if you are the guy that actually MADE your fortune - there is no rich guilt. Now, your wife and kids and grandkids may have it but not you.
