Question about Prius 12V battery

What does that little black valve that attaches to the side of the battery do? Does it NEED to be connected to the battery? First time working on the car and I've never seen this before.

Do NOT open the valve. If the air leaks you're in real trouble.

Well, it needs to be taken off to switch out the batteries so whatever damage that does has happened already. New battery is on right now.

Yeah, pretty simple to reattach if you've got the correct replacement.

Like your Prius, BMW puts their batteries within the passenger compartment and it needs to vent those gasses somewhere else besides there.

But it's a Prius... Great for long distance, but I agree with the consensus that it's an appliance more than a car. Didn't say I liked it ha.
