There is a period of the year where the annual church budget is being decided, and when stewardship is focused upon, usually Oct/Nov, if i remember right. So they appoint a person or committee to handle that, and he usually give a message before the sermon, and sometimes the pastor will mention. They also hand out pledge cards, where you agree to give $x per week to support the church and its missions.
So, money is rarely a focus, but they have to pay salaries and electricity and maintenence, so they focus on it for a short while. It's over by now so you are safe to go back.

As a poster mentioned above, Fall is stewardship time. They are trying to fill in the gaps of the current year's budget and also plan next year. Across all churches the leanest months for giving is the Summer. This means when Fall comes around they are usually in the red and need to remind church goers of financial commitments. They also go into pledge card time for the new year.
I honestly hate that time of year and revert to Sunday School only. I do my part and I do not want to hear about the people who are not meeting their pledges. They should wrap it all up before Advent season.
If you are at a church that is discussing giving for church expenses outside of the Fall, get a new church. Church needs money to run and for ministries, but that should never be the main message.

this is not where it should go. No one should get paid for "preaching"...They tried to do that in the bible and that's where Jesus created the first table flip.

it's a full-time job, and preaching is a small part of it. all week long he ministers to the sick and elderly, runs church business, plans missions, implements missions, does weddings and funerals, etc. plus there are music directors, secretaries, youth ministers, associate pastors, janitors, etc. These guys do not get paid like TV preachers.
