Sounds like New Orleans on a Saturday.

The English should’ve cut their own sugar cane.

Always disliked Jamaica. Pristine resorts shielded from terrible poverty.

That’s pretty much every island in the Caribbean. Only places like the Cayman Islands who became tax havens or places to launder dirty money, are successful without their entire economy revolving around tourism.

This is what guides and hotels advise visitors anyways

That's what I was thinking. Same with DR.

You're not really visiting those countries when you go to the resort, so what difference does it make.

If the $ would stay in the country they would have normal level society.

The resorts take all the $ they make out of the country. And the resort workers work 6 12hr days for about $90.00/week

Shithole country

We stopped there on a cruise. We wanted to visit the Bob Marley tomb. Our cab driver got lost and we ended up touring the country. 3rd world shithole is an understatement. It’s the people and their attitudes.

My wife and I took a cruise about a decade ago and one of the ports was Montego Bay. We walked around for 15 minutes then got back on the ship.

People trying to sell crap to you all the time and would look at you sideways if you declined. Lots of miserable looking people. Just seemed really dark so we had zero interest in going back.

And it’s not just an “islands thing”. We’ve been to Freeport, Nassau and the Dominican Republic and they were nothing like Jamaica. Everyone was friendly and accommodating. It was like the Jamaicans literally resented the fact that we were there. They just seemed almost angry so this news doesn’t surprise me at all.

Not nearly to the degree of Jamaica or even the DR. I agree that the Caymens are the best but there are a lot of islands where the poverty is noticeable but not overwhelming like Jamaica and DR.

Barbados, Antigua, St Bart's, St Lucia, Grenadines, Turks & Caicos are ones I have visited and felt safe. No problem renting a condo or house off of VRBO at these places.

The biggest indicator for places you might not want to go is an over abundance of moderately prices all inclusives. No way I would rent a house or condo on Jamaica or the DR.
