A potential tropical cyclone stirring in the Gulf of Mexico is expected to drop 6 to 10 inches of rain on the Baton Rouge area over the next four days, the National Weather Service said Wednesday. The heaviest rainfall from the tropical system were expected to be south and west of Baton Rouge.

The National Hurricane Center earlier on Wednesday announced a forecast track for the newly developed storm that has it making landfall southeast of Lake Charles on Saturday evening as a Category 1 hurricane.

Projections issued by the National Hurricane Center at mid-morning Wednesday showed there was a reasonable chance that tropical storm force winds — above 39 mph — could reach New Orleans by Thursday night and the Baton Rouge and Lafayette areas Friday morning.
