With summer coming and eveyone heading to the water with their RTIC.

quote:

The splashing, the yelling, the struggle for life, everyone knows that's what a drowning person looks like, right? Wrong. Outside of Hollywood sets, nobody drowns dramatically. Learn how to spot the signs of drowning and save a life.

quote:

Except in rare circumstances, drowning people are physiologically unable to call out for help. The respiratory system was designed for breathing. Speech is the secondary or overlaid function. Breathing must be fulfilled, before speech occurs. Drowning people's mouths alternately sink below and reappear above the surface of the water. The mouths of drowning people are not above the surface of the water long enough for them to exhale, inhale, and call out for help. When the drowning people's mouths are above the surface, they exhale and inhale quickly as their mouths start to sink below the surface of the water.

Drowning people cannot wave for help. Nature instinctively forces them to extend their arms laterally and press down on the water's surface. Pressing down on the surface of the water, permits drowning people to leverage their bodies so they can lift their mouths out of the water to breathe.

I will never forget, we were at a kid’s birthday party and there was a pool and presents were getting ready to be opened. A couple of younger kids perhaps 3-4 was in the pool, people were everywhere around and we saw a dad dive in the pool. One of the kids, that was in a ring, had flipped over and sunk to the bottom. They pulled him out blue and one of the adults was a nurse that started cpr. A few seconds later he was breathing and all was well, but it happens so fast, with so many people around.

Never take your eyes off your kids for a second when they are in the pool.

All they have to do is turn around and they'll just bob to the top.

You mean turn around so they face the water?

I watched a friend save another of our friends from drowning.

They decided to see who could swim the farthest into the ocean(idiots).

On their way back in our friend pretty much just quit. I'm sure he was embarrassed and didn't want to say he was struggling, but by the time it got REALLY serious, it was too late. He didn't scream or flail around. He just gave up.

The other friend had to turn around and grab him, then swim him in.

Thank you, this is important. It should be noted that one is never safe around water. You can drown in as little as 5" of water. Watch out for puddles.

No, just turn around. That's what they tell us to do.
