Went down a rabbit hole searching my wife's last name from when we lived in California.
Nothing for her. But so many interesting things.
>$4000 owed for an IRA.
One dude is owed 160 <$100 royalties from MUSTANG FUEL CORPORATION. Google says he's 103 years old.
Safe deposit contents for a couple of people.
Lots of Metlife entries

Just filled it out and they're sending me a check for $144. Thanks!

I see some in alabama from alabama power for my great grandpa who was born in 1903 and died in 74...
Am I allowed to claim or would it legally have to be my dad? Just says over $100

The money that I found was also stock dividends. Also was owed security deposits from apartments when I was at LSU.

Unclaimed property is up there as one of the worst and most undemocratic practices of state governments. Delaware and California especially terrorize corporate taxpayers to the bill of sometimes 10s of millions using 3rd party auditors who get paid on a contingent fee of how much they assess.
It’s a way for politicians to steal from the citizenry and put their money in the general fund without them ever even knowing it.

I scroll through my family's states looking to see if they have anything and see some of the same random people with 20 separate payments waiting (some adding up to thousands) and feel with social media and technology now, I could find these people and let them know about the money and how to claim it and get a finder's fee somehow out of the deal. Always thought that would be a fun side hustle.
My wife has one on the Georgia site for less than $200 that has been on there a while. She just recently started getting letters from some group doing exactly this....its some sort of a real estate filing fee from a law firm that neither of us ever remember doing business with. They have, in the past, asked for ID and supporting documentation - not worth the effort.

I just claimed around $500.
Most of this is was former deposits, insurance premiums, a couple settlements I’m guessing from class action type suits, etc.
Pretty cool. Shocked there isn’t much of a statute of limitations. One claim went back to an apartment I lived in over 20 years ago.
