One of the requirements for life is a liquid. Elements need to be able to move around in a medium to bind with other elements to form molecules. Solids prevent this interaction and gases don't offer enough support as molecules become heavier.

Water is the best candidate because it's common in space, is only mildly reactive with other molecules and exists as a liquid at moderate temps that just happen to be optimal for life to arise. Not too cold or too hot.
