Are you Latvian?
Yes, though I was born in the states. Moved to Latvia right after independence in 1991.

My wife is from Riga. I'm guessing you live there?
Five miles out of town. Right now though, for a period of time I have been in America dealing with my elderly parents slowly passing and my own health issues (nothing life or death, just pain in the rear stuff like back pain, etc.)

We visit every year sometimes twice.
Cool!

Mexican Food Eaten a couple of those. Not bad, but definitely not US Mex haha quote:
Agreed. But I'm not a huge Mexican food guy anyway so it's good enough for me.

Golf Courses If I remember correctly you have to pay minimum $1k a year just to be able to play?
I retired from golf due to arthritis and lower back pain so I don't know the current pricing. 1k a year for a club though, aint that pretty good?

Her friend lives in Jurmula and while nice there's a lot better beaches in many other Euro countries. Matter of fact, we're moving to Spain later this year.
I understand I was just answering someone else who asked if there are any beaches at all.

And my wife and her family are conservative. Smart Europeans!
Everybody in Eastern Europe would be a Republican. That includes Ukrainians. That is why I find it maddening what is going on. If the laws of nature were not upside down like they are now it would be the democrat "peaceniks" against any US participation and the US Republicans wanting to do much more. It's so weird.
But I don't want to go off on politics in this thread. Nice talking to you.
Sveiks!

Demographics. Estonia is doing demographics right.

They're poor enough not to get demographically nuked by migrants who need govt. handouts to survive.
But their president has a trans kid and seems all in should the need arise. Stay tuned. Victory might defeat them in the end.

Attended the Baltic War College in 2000, as part of their inaugural NATO class, while stationed in Germany. Tallin and Tartu are both wonderful cities. Downtown Tallin has a walled city within the city. Ate at a restaurant that served wild game like bear and elk. Would like to go back. First place I saw people drinking red bull and vodka.

Parents that care if I had to guess. I'm not a teacher, but I create training programs for my company, and the people that remotely care about said trainings almost always end up ahead.

My wife is Estonian....hense my name here on Tigerdroppings.
We talked about it a lot when she was pregnant with our first kid.
The closest thing we have here to it is Montessori schools. (Which both our little ones are in.) They also don't start school till like 6/7 years old. However, when they start, you are there to learn. We have wayyy more holidays/days off than them. And they don't do all these "fun days" such as dress up as old people, ECT... She said early education for young ones are mostly about experience. They do a lot outside and let kids get out.
Anddd....let's be honest, culture and demographics.
I was blown away the first time we went and I saw a 5/6 year old kid get on the bus, public transportation, by herself pay, sit down, and get to where sh had to go in Tallinn. It was a 10 min ride with multiple stops. I still think about. No worries of kidnapping, or anything.
Every time we fly back into NOLA after visiting, I want to cry as we land.
I love my home state, but when you go to a place like Tallinn and see what the world could be like, it hurts to come home.

The way I understand, that's just for the card from the state so to speak. That's not club dues, which would be extra. Anyway, you'd probably play golf maybe 2 months out of the year

But yes, the Baltics are a very cool set of countries and everyone should visit.

In Soviet days, Russians controlled Estonia and the Baltics.
Grok:
quote:
As of the most recent data, ethnic Russians make up approximately 23% of Estonia's population. According to the 2021 Estonian Population Census, out of a total population of about 1.33 million, 315,252 individuals identified as ethnic Russians, which translates to roughly 23.6%. This percentage has been gradually declining over the years due to factors such as emigration and natural population changes, with earlier figures showing Russians comprising around 25.6% in 2000 and higher proportions during the Soviet era. The current date is April 08, 2025, and this estimate aligns with the latest available census information.
