NOLA

The Archdiocese of New Orleans has removed a recently ordained deacon from ministry at a Metairie church after receiving an allegation that he abused a child 20 years ago, church officials announced Monday.

Archbishop Gregory Aymond removed Deacon V.M. Wheeler from his post at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Old Metairie.

In addition to serving as a deacon since his 2018 ordination, Wheeler, 63, is a partner at the well-known Chaffe McCall law firm. Archdiocese officials said they didn't receive a "formal" report of abuse until last week.

Wheeler was listed as one of the parish's three deacons as recently as Sunday's parish bulletin.

Wheeler has been a member of the state bar since 1984, when he graduated from Tulane Law School. Chaffee McCall, the law firm where Wheeler is a partner, is one of the most prominent in the city. In addition to practicing law, Wheeler has been an investment banker in New York, Dallas and Houston, according to a biography that was removed from the firm's website on Monday.

He's also served on a variety of local nonprofit boards, including the Catholic Foundation of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, the Tulane Fund Advisory Board and the Loyola University New Orleans Alumni Association.

If all I have to judge him on is that picture, I'd say he looks guilty.

That being said, this is one of those things where the accusation alone does 90% of the damage. His life will never be the same regardless of his innocence.

ETA - or guilt.

That’s almost as bad as being a lawyer.

If he broke a yard stick over a shite head 10 year old 20 years ago I’d probably shake his hand. If he fricked him in the arse that’s a whole different story.

"Anyone with any further information or who needs to report an allegation should contact the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. Again, the Archdiocese of New Orleans encourages anyone with allegations of sexual abuse of minor to contact their Victims Assistance Coordinator at 504-861-6253."

You know if I was molested by a priest THE LAST place I would contact is the Archdiocese to report my abuse. I think people should stick with reporting this to the proper law enforcement authorities.

It seems more like a spanking or hitting kids kind of thing than sexual. I'm in the doubt camp for this guy. The people who sexualy abuse children almost always make it a constant thing. The reason they kept moving priests around is that they kept committing the crimes. Why only one issues in 20 years if he is a chomo?
