Two weeks ago my wife went out for coffee and came back with a dog. The dog is a lab that will turn 2 next month, was put up for adoption when its owner was deployed over seas. Dog is great, plays well with my other dog, very friendly, listen to commands well.

Problem is the dog keeps getting out of my yard. Haven't been able to figure out how the dog is getting out of my yard, until this morning. I watched him from a squatted position jump over a standard 6 foot wooden fence.

What is the best way to keep him in the yard, an electric wired fence, a wireless fence, any other ideas? Any brand in particular?

My yard is fairly large and when this dog gets out he runs. Sunday he got out and was nearly 4miles from my house having crossed a 6 lane highway (Gen. De Gaulle).

I think some sort of wireless shock fence inside of the the perimeter of your wood fence would be a quick fix and will teach it to stay away from the wood fence.

I've had success with adding an electric wire to the current fence. After awhile you can turn it off and the dog will probably stay away from the fence.

I'd start with that before investing a lot more money into other options. Good luck.

Is he an inside dog or outside dog?

If he is an inside dog you could just not leave him outside unattended.

1) Do you walk the dog? How much and for how long?
2) Is the dog outside all day long while you're at work?

He jumped up on top of the fence with a majority of his body over it, and he let gravity do the rest.

I have 2 Akitas and 1 of them use to do the same thing. The electic fence won't work in the long run IMO. What I did was take some of the PVC lattice (that was the same color as my fence) & cut it in half length-wise and put it on top of the fence; your 6' high fence is now approx. 8' high....problem solved. It actually enhanced the look of the fence.

You need to walk the dog as much as you can as well.

Sounds like the dog doesn't want to live on the Westbank. Was making a run for the bridge.

sounds to me like the dog is trying to go home. it "knows" that it is not where it belongs. until you figure that out, you will probably continue to have problems. i would talk to your vet about it to see if they have any suggestions.

on the other hand, a shock collar may provide a solution without having to install the entire fence. you have a position where you can see the dog. when you see the dog preparing to jump the fence, hit it with the shock collar. it shouldn't take more than one or two times and the dog will stop. i had a golden once who was eating all of the fireplace wood i had in a rack in the backyard. in addition to destroying the wood, it was tearing up his insides. i put the shock collar on him and watched through the back window. when he went to grab a piece of wood, i hit the button, and he jumped back. he hesitated and then went back toward the rack. i hit the button a second time, and that was all it took. he never went near the wood again. i took the battery out of the shock collar and left it on him for a few days.

nope. i believe i still have a copy of the $1200 surgery bill from the vet where they had to remove junks of wood and a section of his intestine.
