Please explain the process of getting a license. I know you first get vfr then ifr and so on. How long does this take? What is the approximate cost? Thanks.

Took me 4 month and around 10k but that was 20 years ago.
Take ground school, then start getting your time in the air.

You can go light sport for about $3500. Ground school, 15hrs flight training and 5hrs solo. Can be completed in as little as 2 weeks.

The amount of time it takes you will have a lot to do with how serious you are about it. If you go frequently you'll spend less on repeating lessons. Just shop around and see what everyone's wet costs are

It's been a while but you need a minimum of 40 house to get your license. Figure about 125 an hour. You'll more Tha likely take about 50. Save up the money and do it as fast as possible. The quicker you do it the cheaper it will be. That's for VFR private pilot. IFR will take a lot more money and instruction. Worry about that dwn the road.

I'm ~25 hours into my VFR at Lakefront (KNEW). I started with an individual instructor who owned his own plane and charged $160/hr TOTAL--instructor, plane, and fuel. Best deal around.
However, he recently took a job with a major and had to leave town, so after searching for a new instructor I finally settled on one of the Flight Schools. Their rates are $49/hr for ground time and $59/hr for air time instruction. If you rent a plane from them it's an additional ~$149/hr "wet"--plane and fuel.
I agree with the estimates from everyone else--$10,000 all in including study aides, tests, etc. Definitely want to make sure have the time and money to fly regularly. I had to sit out for 5-6 weeks during the instructor search and my landings technique had gone to shite!
