I will say a special prayer tonight for you, your sweet baby, and family. Obviously there is a lot of stress for you right now and I hope you feel relief soon and your baby continues to fight and stays heathy. I'm sorry you are going through this tough time.

Ochsner NOLA is the better option here.
That's up for debate. I know that the last time I was in the Woman's NICU there were babies there from LA, TX, MS and AR.

They are both Level III NICU's but Ochsner is closer and a greater number of specialists and resources at its disposal.

Prayers sent for the little guy for a healthy recovery, and to you and your family.

My daughter spent a little over 3 weeks in NICU. The best advice I have is to take it hour by hour. It is a devastating experience to have a tiny baby that you can't help. Be there for your son and be patient. They are resilient little creatures but they progress at their own speed. I am so sorry for you and send thoughts and love your way.
There was a sweet poster named Kantz going through NICU when I did. I never heard from him again and fear the worst. I say prayers for his Molly almost every night and hope he doesn't post anymore because she keeps him busy.

Prayers man. Reading the thread I didn't realize how many premature births there are.

I know someone who had a child 2 months early. He was in the hospital for maybe 6 weeks but he is now a healthy 13 year old.

Isn't your daughter Hope? I remember you posting about her when she was born because she was born around the time my mother died. I'm so glad to hear she's doing well!

She is hope. Thanks. It's been awhile since I've updated that thread. I'll do it in the next few days.

My daughter wasn't supposed to survive birth and spent a month in the nicu there. She's heading to the first grade this coming school year. Everything will be ok for you, prayers sent

Sorry to hear it.
On the otherhand 9 days isnt that bad. Have twin niece and nephew born 3 months early. Now hes a 9 year old hard hitting strong safety and she was doing cartwheels around my yard earlier. Womans Hospital and the support after was great.

In today's world, that is not premature at all - may need to get that baby to a different hospital ASAP - one that has a great Neonatal Unit.
Were they able to get steroids into the baby before delivery?
Update - read the entire thread - looks like the move is the right thing - will be thinking about you and your family - it is a stressful ordeal - I can answer questions from a parent standpoint - my kids spent a combined 11 weeks in NICU.
stay strong and let the nurses and doctors do their work - as others have said, the NICU staff is usually some of the best that the hospital has on staff.

I am not sure. But I doubt it. The mother had a check up Wednesday and the baby was born 7:44 the next morning. Ex-rays showed fluid in the lungs and possible pre mature. We didn't expect to have the problems we have had. The ICU had several premature babies smaller and earlier than him.

Any experts out there that have an idea on what is happening?
My niece was born after barely 6 months. She was 1 pound 11 ounces. You could have fit her in one hand. We have a picture somewhere with her next to one of those little rubber-bulb things they use to get boogers out of babies noses and she was the same size.
She spent the first 3-4 months of her life in the neonatal unit in a plastic incubator, like bubble boy or something. Spent a while on a breathing machine.
Even after she came home for almost another year and a half she was hooked 24/7 to a heart monitor/ defibrillator. Her heart stopped and wad restarted by this machine nearly 10 times in her first year of life.
She just turned 14 years old and will start her freshmen year of HS this year. She's perfectly healthy. Has grown to be one of the tallest girls her age. She's been on the school basketball the last two years.
I'm no expert, but I tell you all that because if they could save my nieces life under those circumstances 14 years ago, and she's grown into a perfectly normal healthy girl, I am confident that with all the advances in medical technology that your grandson will be just fine

Sending prayers your way. I've read good things about Oschner's pediatric doctors. Your grandson is in good hands.
My wife and I are about to soon begin our own journey. Our unborn son has hypoplastic left heart syndrome with double outlet ventricle coming out of the single value. Basically he is missing one of his lower chambers in his heart. In classic HLHS there is only one outlet but having two gives us the chance that we may not need the immediate surgery after delivery (norwood procedure). We will definitely need the next 2 open hearts at 3 month (Glenn) and 3 year (Fontan).
Currently we are in the stage of finding which pediatric surgical center we want to use. Boston, Philly, and Houston are the best in the country. We will likely be going to Houston. Our pediatric cardiologist said the pediatric surgeon at Oschner in New Orleans has been doing great work so that is a plus for your Grandson if it were to come to that.
Regarding the Woman's vs Oschner debate, we absolutely love Woman's and that's where we will be having our son if we do not need the immediate surgery. Woman's just does not have the specialty surgeons and capabilities to handle certain issues.
I hope the best for you and your family.

My first born son was 11 weeks pre-mature. He was 2 lbs. - 12 3/4 ounces.
Despite their size, babies are extremely resilient. Pray and talk to them, and touch them as much as possible in their little isolette.

As an ex NICU nurse your statement that "St Tammany can only do so much" struck a chord. I hate to be the one to say this, but if you see this as a problem you and your family need to raise all kinds of hell to get the baby transferred ASAP!!!!
