How are you going to handle in-laws
How are you going to manage finances
What are your expectations (children)
Are you going to be members of a church congregation
How are you going to handle conflict

Don't use birth control.
Work on your finances.
Things like that.

Read Ephesians 5:22-23 to your fiance and see how she reacts.

It really is so sad how so many of these people have such a fcked up view of what marriage is or should be.
Been married for 19 years and I love it. Wouldn't change a damn thing

Priest may say "hey this might be a bad idea". You will think different then end up separated and divorced within 2 years. At least that is what I gathered from the process

What kinda stuff should I/we expect?

Depends on how well you know the counselor and what kind of person your wife is.

Is it with a lay person, a couple, a priest, or a minister?

Which faith?

Mine was awesome. My wife and I are good friends with her pastor. We had a couple good discussions about how to communicate and how to look at the big picture and how to handle the mundane arguments that accompany marriage without letting them snowball to divorce, and then we talked about Rush and quoted Princess Bride the rest of the time.

I have had friends who absolutely hated it and went though the extreme Catholic guilt hellfire nonsense.

Marriage counseling (for men's perspective) advice:

1 - "it's my fault"
2 - " I'm sorry"
3 - "it will never happen again"

Heres what I got told:

The wedding is not about you. Its all about her. if they gave oscars for weddings, the best the groom would get is best actor in a supporting role. (thats actually a quote).

Your job in future will be to pay for shite. thats it. You're a fricking wallet carrier. In exchange you will get an ever dimimishing amount of pussy. Blow jobs will disappear first.

Wait at least 4 years before having kids. That way you will have seen each other in every sort of situation from good to bad. If you still love her, THEN consider creating a child.

Save as much money as possible now. That kid is gonna get every dime the wife doesnt spend.

Lol who the frick did you go to?

We got married in the Catholic Church so we had marriage prep. It was all about strengthening communication and partnership. It was a valuable asset to prepare us to get married. It really helped up to realize and talk about things we had never even thought about much less talked about.

And also helped us learn how to just listen and appreciate the other side of things and how to deal with and resolve any conflicts that will arise.

That was my experience with the Catholic sessions.

Honestly of my 20 or so closest friends only one is divorce and most are at over 15 years of marriage.

I think it's good for most people to go through this process of some kind of pre marriage counseling. Seems that many don't know shite about communicating and how to make things work when the going gets a little tough.
And the financial expectations discussion can't be stressed enough

It was incredibly easy for my wife and I. Met with the catholic priest at LSU. Went to campus for an interview, had an online test to take, and went back for a follow up interview. Did one Saturday morning/afternoon of a class and that was it. 3 days of obligations spread out over a few weeks. Easy stuff.

ETA: There was an option for an overnight weekend, but I was living two states away and was told one day of classes would be fine. I coordinated our meetings with the priest on weekends I would be in BR anyway and made a special trip for that class.
