I have two other dogs. A 5 year old rescued Chow mix (golden retriever?) and an 18 y/o Pomeranian mix.
The chow mix was a badly abused stray (about 1 y/o) when I adopted her. She showed up at my store which is located along a busy thoroughfare, darting in and out of traffic and barking at my customers.
She was real skinny so one day I went to the store on my lunch break and picked her up some dog food and started feeding her in the parking lot. She wouldn't let anyone come within 30 feet of her mind you.
After about a week of feeding her and gradually moving the plate closer and closer to the door each time (including driving to the store on weekends when the business was closed), I got her to come in the building to eat, and had my assistant sneak around back and lock her in.
Rounded her up I to a cage and transported her to a kennel at the house. I them returned to work to finish the work day. When I got home it was pouring freezing cold rain outside and the kennel was soaked. It took me 30 minutes to round her back up I to the cage, which I shut and carried into the house.
I offered her food once inside, and after half an hour or so of her feeling me out she ate. It took a good two-threehours of sitting in the room with her assuring her that I wasn't going to hurt her before she built up the courage to approach me.
She finally walked up to me, and upon seeing that I had no intention of harming her, licked me once on the nose as if to say, "thank you".
She finally let me put a collar on her and from that day on she's been the sweetest, most loyal, loving and eternally grateful dog I've ever known.
She's still skittish around strangers, but she's adjusted very well to having a loving home. She shows signs that whoever had her before me beat the hell out of the poor thing, which is terrible in its own right but even worse because she's such a good dog.
Will have to get to a computer to post pics b/c my phone is running real slow at the moment.

Oh, and on Valentines day of 2013 she wriggled out of her collar and was run over by a pickup truck. An emergency blood transfusion coupled with the best wound care products available to people in a hospital setting (I used to sell them) saved her life and helped her make a full recovery.
It cost me a pretty penny (around $4k in all), but was well worth it. After all that dog had been through I wasn't about to let her die just when her life was getting good.
This is a dog whose facial expression was worth her weight in gold the day I brought home her first bed. She had never had a bed before and was pleasantly amazed that someone cared enough about her to give her her very own bed.
I had to postpone my engagement (spent the ring money on veterinary care), which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I'm obviously no longer with the girl and soooo grateful I didn't marry her.
Just goes to show how God works in mysterious ways...
