I daily drive an 07 Gt and had another 07 previously. Mustang forums mentioned earlier are a great resource. Also the spark plug issue got better in 08 with a redesign of the heads so that's something to think about. Mine currently has 158,000 miles and has had an alternator replaced and that's it. Door panel inserts will fall off. Bad design as the backing absorbs glue. I did a tune and JLT cold air that helped with throttle response and also knocked off .2 in the 1/8 with daily driver 91 octane tune and .3 with the race tune. I also went with a Hurst shifter and Ford Racing axleback. I like that it isn't much louder than stock and has zero drone.
The 3 valve 4.6 isn't the most powerful engine made but it's reliable and just fast enough to be fun. I run full synthetic fluids and in 8 years it hasn't given me any trouble. I personally like the looks of the 05-09 better than any Mustang outside of the 69-70 fast backs so I'll probably just keep this one as I have it how I want it for the most part. Car is easy to work on and cheap and easy to upgrade. Stereo is easily upgraded with a double din aftermarket if he is into that kind of stuff.
As far as turning a kid loose in one I understand some concerns but I'm of the opinion its safer than a non sports car for the simple fact that all kids will drive fast and to me it's safer in a car designed for that than a truck or suv. It will stop and corner better than 90% of what's on the road and that helps a lot in accident avoidance.

You want to get whatever year switched to the 5.0 Cayote engine. The prior 4.6 wasn’t very impressive.
My brother buys a new GT every two years. I have to say, those are some badass cars. Not my thing as I’m a truck guy but, they are crazy fast and drive like a muscle car of my youth. Fun cars.

Its a good choice. 79 to 84 was fox body based, light but frame was not strong. 05-14 was S-197, heavier much better frame. Original 3V sparkplugs were bad design, replacements are fixed, they probably have been changed in any left out there. If you do break a plug you can buy the tool to remove them yourself. A little nickle anti-seize and you're go to go.
A good tune and long tube exhaust will get you around 350 horse and it will sound good. I had an 06 with a stick that had minimal mods and ran 13.3 @ 106 all day. Put 85K on it with zero issues. Around an 08 will be a good car for a young first driver, better traction control and a well understood car by that year.

I had a 2008 GT premium. Currently drive a 2016 GT premium.
The Mustangs took a huge steep forward in 2015.
Probably worth trying to stretch for the current generation.
I might even consider a 2015 6 cylinder over a 2008 GT (I think the 2015 6 actually claims more HP).

Don't fricking do it. You will regret every second you are dumping money into that shitbox.
Sincerely,
Ex mustang owner.

Had a 2000 model. Fun, fast car. Gave it to my son. After about a year, he hit a deer. Totaled it out. He said he was only going about 35 mph. Had just left the house.
That should tell you that it doesn't take much to total them out.

I look forward to watching you drive like a complete schmuck in your trashy car.

Dude. That’s like promoting a 22 year old postgrad to senior manager on his second day.
Get the kid a used Accord and call it a day. Save the Mustang for a high school graduation present.

This would have been me at 16 in a mustang.
