Wassup, TheFonz. You know your old house has been demolished? The new owners were planning to build a modern house on the site. I haven’t spoken to them in awhile, but my guess is that I t’s been delayed, probably by rising costs.

That’s a big ole plot! I didn’t know it went so far back.

The empty school? I would bet it's a burglary. Nothing else would be going on at an abandoned school at midnight.

Just moved into JT a few months ago. Already had a package stolen off my porch by some methy dude

That school is currently being renovated. If the Sherriff's were there it was likely some sort of construction site burglary

Heard a rumor that EBRPSS gave the entire former school site to BREC. There's already a park next to it. I guess this will be a massive park now - assuming the rumor is true.

I'm kind of torn. While I think this is infinitely better than selling the land to a developer so they can build a shite ton of $600k garden homes, I'm worried about when BREC gets any ideas. We don't need another Liberty Lagoon over there.

Yeah, my son went by there a couple of months ago and took a picture. It was a good ol' house. Many epic baseball games were played in that backyard. When my folks sold it, we knew it was going to be knocked down. To be honest, I'm surprised it took as long as it did. I haven't been back to the old hood since the folks bailed back in 2015. Others have told me about half the houses on the Cal Road to Jefferson Highway strip of Floynell have been knocked down and replaced with McMansions.

That’s my old hood. The elementary school is closed now? Bummer. Went there K-3rd. Lived on Floynell.

Lived on Idlewood. We had the pool, school grounds with the basketball courts, and the BREC park. The barrow pit, hunting from Siegen to where Blue Cross is and the 3 pipes A lot of kids a few years younger than me and a few years older. We had a neighborhood reunion 7-8 years ago and it was packed. Great place to grow up! Miss that place and the good ole times!

You’re either my “really incredibly close” neighbor or my “not that far, sort of around the corner” neighbor. Either way, welcome! Sorry you had a package stolen - it really sucks that we have to be so worried about assholes stealing our stuff right off of our porch in broad daylight.

Yep. Mom passed away last year and we’re selling her house. The market was looking pretty good until the last few months! I think we missed the peak.

I probably knew you growing up. Are your initials, R.F.?

Yeah, it was a great place to live and grow up! Lots of great families. Of course, we didn’t know how special it was at the time

I heard about that. Sorry for your loss. She was a very nice lady and a great neighbor. She was also my bus driver for two or three years.

There were a lot of great families in that neighborhood. When my folks were moving away, I remember your mom visited and said that she would be the last of the "old families" on the street. Well, at least we have the memories.

We had the pool

The pool was awesome. Had a lot of fun summers there. It would sometime get super crowded but you were with your friends and didn't care how busy it got.

school grounds with the basketball courts

In 1985, my friends and I were playing on the playground there. We were running off the court and I lost my footing on some pebbles. I fell straight back and hit my head on the edge of the court asphalt. Knocked me clean out. I woke up about twenty minutes later in the school office with an icepack on my head. This was in 1985, and we were tough back then. No call home or the doctor. Just shake it off and get back to class!

the BREC park.

Played a lot of pick-up baseball games there. It usually started off with me and a couple of cousins, and before long two or three others would join in and we would have some kind of hap-hazard baseball game going on.

Man, those were great days. It could be a billion degrees outside, but we didn't give a shite. We just rode bikes, played baseball, and go to the pool. Ride a bike to Video Visions and rent a movie and get a slurpie at the Seven Eleven (before it became a Circle K. Was Pac-A-Sac too at one time). Get a chili dog from Ramers. Just run the neighborhood and it was SAFE. We were probably the last generation - the last pre-internet generation - to enjoy such a life.

I doubt BREC puts a destination site in the middle of a neighborhood. That site could be great.

Went to JT K-2nd probably 87-90, and I remember that song. I remember my 1st grade teacher was Mrs. Gibson and my Kindergarten teacher was Mrs. Buener or something like that. Dont remember anything from 2nd grade.

I don't think the School board can sell 16th section lands, but they can allow use for other public entities.

I think I’m a bit older than you, but I loved your description of life in the neighborhood. It was spot on.

Do you remember playing Sheep and Wolf in the deep end of the pool. We’d tread water for hours playing that game. Damn we were in good shape back then!

I played on a some BREC softball teams on JT field. M&G Fleet Service and Century 21. That would have been in the early 1980’s.

Remember the lady that sold cup sickles across the street from the park? I was shocked when she raised her rates from 15 cents to a WHOLE quarter!

My favorite memories were working with my friends and cousins as life guards at the pool in the summer of 1985. We had some seriously pretty girls working with us!!
