Actually I don't think any are that cheap and a thermocouple is a $20 part.

Be dumb to throw away a (even) $300 machine, for a $20 part and $80 in labor. When it cost at least $200 to install.

I think that is what I paid for the last one I bought 6 years ago.

OT kinda

The most expensive water heater I saw back then was about 1k.

It had programmable timers on it to shut down mid-day and late night.

Have you done any of those and do you think there is a decent return on them?

So my MIL needs to replace the water heater in her house. She just told me today that she just found a plumber online and they came out to give an estimate and charged her $80 just for the estimate.

That seems incredibly messed up to me. Is this standard practice for plumbers? I told her not to use them, but she already paid them the $80.

Y'all have any recommendations?

many business do this but refund the estimate by crediting that cost to the repair bill if they do the work so the estimate becomes free at that point.

its a way to avoid diagnosing it for free and then the homeowner watches a youtube video how to do it and does the repairs themselves. its not uncommon at all for that to happen and its pretty common place for any smart business to charge a refundable deposit if they repair it.

now replacing a gas water heater is very very easy for anyone with basic entry level mechanic skills. with electric its even easier but you have basic electrical understanding and be able to replace a wall outlet and not afraid of electricity.

Lol. You build sales expenses into bids. At least any competent tradesman would do this.

Size of the attic access if its relevant. Horse shite.

It got up there it can come down. If it's in the attic you are bidding 2 people anyway.

Two people for how long? I have two water heaters, both in the attic, both have been replaced, one due to location and access took the same two guy's three times as long to replace as the other one. Seems pretty relevant, and you are not going to figure that out over the phone.

People who do installs mainly and repairs mainly are two separate things totally.
No one who mainly does repairs is coming over for free.
Installers can quote without doing anything. Sometimes it takes me 30-45 minutes to even find a problem. Is that supposed to be free?

Ill agree with the goodbee recommendation. I spoke directly with the owners wife to set up an appointment and the owner himself came out and gave me a free estimate. He sent out two younger guys who were both certified and very professional to do the job. They did excellent work and were very respectful of our home. They also guarantee their work which is great. They were kind of a breath of fresh air after dealing with some of the other yahoos blowing off appointments and giving sky high estimates when they actually did decide to show up.
