They may look to hire you straight in as a board operator. The need is there.
Might not want you as an operator if you have that much time on the board.

I know it's competitive, but I know some people who got in there with little to no competition.
What does that mean, exactly?

That used to be the case. Its getting away from the good ol boy culture.Alot of the managers that make the hiring decisions are young and not easily influenced by the "old timers".

I'd say you are in real good shape, as long as you don't hike your leg and fart during the interview. By the way, I'm interviewing also.

I doubt they would hire straight in as a controller. We have to have 3-5 yrs of outside unit exp before training on the board.

There are people there who wouldn't have gotten a 2nd look if qualification and fit was all that mattered when they were hired.

it is. as long as you are ready to work.

Don't be a plant operator. Apply to law school and get a job at Kean Miller or Stone Pigman.

I think what you are saying happens with a lot of organizations. There are always things working within the internal infrastructure that we aren't aware of. The most qualified people aren't always hired; that's the way the world works.

Exxon. I expect more interviews (with different plants) coming within the next few weeks also.

No, it's at another hotel. Can't remember the name of it now.

It isn't common, but has happened recently. Scary proposition on both sides of the mic because of unfamiliarity.
Personally, I can't think of a refinery around that I would leave after a career in which I already had 8 years on the board. Rebuilding your reputation and work experience isn't worth it. Everyone has their reasons for switching up though.

Of course not. It's more fun to talk about when it's exxon though. People tend to get really butthurt about exxon.

When I hired all the interviews were at the plant you were interviewing for.

The email stated polyolefins, but last time I interviewed with them the email invitation to interview stated it was XOM Chem plant. The guys that interviewed me stated that once the candidates are picked they assign the hired candidates to refinery, chem plant, etc.
Basically, what I'm saying, is I'm not sure if it's for sure polyolefins or not.

I agree. When I work the board the guys I work with can tell how things are going by my tone of voice. It takes alot of trust to be out there when theres an upset and you are counting on the board guy to reign it back in.I wouldnt want a new guy up there.I could see there being some resentment from other employees as well.

I came through with a few that went straight to the board. I think some people resented them, but mainly because they don't realize it isn't exactly unicorn kisses and mermaid farts up there.
That doesn't stop people from clamoring to get there.

Chem and refinery usually hire big classes at the same time.
Polyolefins/Plastics/Resins would likely have stand alone interviews. They all fall under the Chemicals umbrella but do their own hiring with assistance of BR Area HR.
