Small plane crashes in mountainous area near Payson, AZ. A father, his two young daughters(12 and 14) and their stepmother was killed. They had left Scottsdale, AZ and were on their way to an annual ski trip in Telluride.
The biological mother(ex wife) apparently had been trying to go to court about this very issue in the past. She felt her ex husband (who had only been flying a few years) didn't have enough experience and had wanted a court order banning her daughters from flying with their dad because she was scared of a crash. Very sad and horrible that her worst fears came true.

Too bad about that, but plane crash stories are almost a weekly, if not daily, occurrence across the country.
They don't call small planes like that "doctor killers" for nothing.

Yeah you do hear of several crashes.
No way in hell would I ride in a small plane like that with someone that wasn't an extremely experienced pilot.

I bet you wouldn't drive your car on the interstate then, right?

You can buy a used Cessna for like 30k
Crazy to me that somebody would fly something that cheap

I get what you are saying.
But who actually survives small plane crashes? Not many. The poor ex wife. She never wanted her daughters on that plane...and obviously there was nothing she could do to stop it from happening. She was likely written off by the court and judge as just some overly paranoid woman.

The small Cessnas are very safe in the hands of a good pilot. My dad flew his 172 for years (but he was a 32 year USMC pilot, vet of WWII, Korea and Vietnam).
A doctor friend of my Dad's had a twin Beech. Doctor and his wife and my mom and dad fly to Mexico in the plane. On the way back, doctor asked my dad to take over and "fly low" (Dad had flown that model plane in the USMC).
Dad has been in a special weapons squadron for several years, which did nothing but low level flying. He apparently scared the shite out of everyone with his "low" flying, which was much ower than they anticipated.

They were heading to Telluride.
I've never flown there personally, but a few of my buddies say that airport is no joke, especially if you're shooting an approach.

Where the plane crashed at is where we go camping often in the summer(Mogollon Rim). Even in the summer sometimes the fog can be kinda crazy there at times and I would imagine makes it difficult to see the escarpment. I can only imagine flying over there with snowy, winter conditions.

I flew in a 1955 Beechcraft Bonsnza today, worth about $35,000, and it was in excellent condition. Never felt unsafe.
With that said the service ceiling dropped today. That's where inexperienced pilots can run into trouble, by thinking they can fly in conditions they can't or having the mindset that they need to get to their destination no matter what.

My buddy just got his wings not too long ago. He's gonna be flying the E-2 Nighhawk. But this summer, we're taking a guys trip to Pensacola to fly around over the beaches and shite. I trust him.
