It would definitely be nice to know that you have that system as a backup if you are a private pilot. Would a system like that have been able to take over Greg Biffle’s plane in order to make a safe landing? I know nothing about aviation so may be a stupid question.

They are a great system if there is an issue with the pilot - could be incapacitation, could be as simple as spatial disorientation. Punch a button and you’re along for the ride.

Buffle’s was likely a mechanical issue so this wouldn’t have helped.

Was on a plane flying into Denver a few days ago which got diverted due to 100mph winds.

Could have been my plane.

Preliminary data says the auto pilot was never engaged.

Not surprising. You don’t take off with autopilot, and if a failure occurred before 600 feet, or whenever he would have engaged autopilot, then there is no reason to engage it. You’d just hand fly it onto the ground.

For an esteemed trip 7 pilot like yourself that sounds stupid, how many pilots has it killed though? VFR rated pilots running into IMC and losing their bearings?

Where was Doug White?

Happened to him and he landed his King Air with his wife and daughters on board.

It sure was. I sold it last year, though because my missions went away and it would just be sitting idle most of the time.

makes me wonder if someone could log in to a plane remotely and land it for them. Scary that someone could hack in and crash a plane just like someone could log in and safely land a plane. Technology.
