It is a 20 round magazine and it is inserted incorrectly. The base of the 20 round magazine is slanted at the same angle as the bottom of the M16 magazine well. That one does not appear to be. I carried one every day for a year about the time that photo was taken (except for 6 days in Hong Kong in 1969). I actually don’t see how the magazine in that photo stayed in place.
