I have a friend who collects Hollywood memorabilia. He found a stash of 20's and 30's black and white promo photos (a lot of actress photos), many of which do not identify the person. Others identify a person who was obviously not successful.
Based on a scans I was emailed, some of them were very good looking.

Yeah, the studios had lots of pretty gals under contract, and many of them only managed bit-parts in films, or maybe a heroine in a little b-western. Others had some breakout role, and developed a career. Many of them just came and went, without notice. All of them usually posed for some glamour shots, which were usually sold off to cheesecake magazines like "Film Fun" and "Real Screen Humor" in the 1930s, and "Pic" in the 1940s. All part of the business.
I did check on Marguerite Churchill's photos on the 'fanpix' site, and it DID include two from the session that your posted picture seemed to derive from. It still really throws me, though. Because in her films, you never see Churchill look anything like that. You never see her with sultry half-closed eyes or sexy poses. And her hair is almost always very dark. She always had more of a 'kid sister' look, so to speak. Her most famous role these days is probably the big-budget epic "The Big Trail" (1930), opposite John Wayne in his first lead role. She was also Will Rogers' daughter in "They Had to See Paris" (1929), a pretty funny early-talkie comedy. She was also in the Boris Karloff thriller "The Walking Dead" (1936).
