An unidentified corporal from the US Army's 30th Infantry Division (based in the San Francisco Presidio) stands at attention with a group of women in two-piece bathing costumes, doughboy helmets, and heels, each of whom holds an M1917 Enfield rifle, on a parade ground in Camp George Derby, on the grounds of the California Pacific International Exposition in Balboa Park, San Diego California, mid to late 1935. Mostly obscured behind the women is the entrance to the expo's so-called 'Indian Village'.

I love how you corrected me on the patches, but said nothing about the half naked women

Marines do not travel in dress blues and should be wearing his A's

I’m not aware of any regulation that state that. I traveled in mine when I came home from Japan. The class A uniform is to be worn to check into a new duty station but, it is not a requirement to actually travel in them.

The Marines added the crossed rifles to the rank insignia in 1959.

When my son was in the Corp, he wasn’t allowed to travel in uniform. I believe that rule has changed.

Not sure when that was. I was active from 94-98. It was suggested not to travel in uniform as to not draw attention to yourself. However it wasn’t completely restricted. The only time I ever wore a uniform traveling was from Portland to Monroe on my way back from Japan. I caught the eye of a nice looking gal until a Captain sat down in full Blues. After that, she didn’t look my way again… haha

2016-2020. USMC personnel, at least enlisted personnel, were prohibited from traveling in any uniform. And maybe it was a “strong suggestion “...but my kid took it as a rule. Ha

I’m pretty certain that’s no longer the case.

This is from the 1878 Paris World's Fair. The balloon could hold up to 50 people. The designer was engineer Henri Giffard.
