Okay, these are the things I want to find out.
He was a Tec 5. All of his wartime memorabilia "disappeared" at the hands of another family member.
Tech 5, was a rank equivalent to Sargent. He must have had some technical skill.

Eugene Sledge, USMC, South Pacific, WWII. Given the nickname “Sledgehammer” by his fellow Marines, he is best known for his iconic WWII book “With the Old Breed” that recounts his wartime experiences

Looks like early/mid 1980s. Is this Sister Cindy with the sign?

I have a friend that says it's great, but he would never admitted he wasted money on a bogus site.

To be honest, I’ve never heard of it.

I never met him, but his son is one of my closest friends. He has done a lot to keep his father’s legacy alive. He was even involved as a consultant on the mini-series the Pacific. And he’s very involved in the WWII history circuit and has even been published in one of the WWII history magazines.

I believe they are connected to Ancestry.com, so likely very legit. I've never used Fold3 myself but I have heard of it.

I'm guessing the Tech ranks weren't in any leadership position, because I've often heard my Korea vet Dad say someone was as fricked up as a T5 at a squad leader's meeting.

Gotcha. Not sure if you know this, but your grandpa had one of the most dangerous jobs in the war and served in the unit, namely the 8th Air Force, that had the highest casualty rate of any major combat command in either Europe or the Pacific. Your grandpa, along with the men he flew with, was the epitome of a real hero.
He died before I was born but he had quite the life. Ran track at LSU, made all sec in 38 and 39 in the mile relay, letterman on the LSU basketball team.
I wanted to find his military record or medals but I think they were all lost when there was a fire at the archives in Washington or something

Here's another picture, this was my great uncle.

The Tigers tie the game in the last five minutes of the second quarter. As with the Tulane touchdown, the LSU drive begins with T Bob Simon punting out on his own 43.
Mickal whips a 22y pass to E Dennis "Pete" Burge. But the Tigers bog down and face fourth-and-three on the 14. Abe drives over right tackle for 5y and a first down on the nine.
After seemingly regaining the momentum, LSU goes backwards on two fumbles and a run that loses a yard. That sets up "one of the most spectacular individual catching feats in LSU football history" (Dan Hardesty).
With less than minute left in the half, Abe takes the snap from his tailback position, fades back, and fires a line drive that seems destined to sail over the heads of a group of players in the end zone. Suddenly, right behind and between two defensive backs, LSU's Burge, the basketball center using his speed and leg-spring, leaps into the air, pulls the ball in with his right hand, and falls backwards on the ground with the ball securely clutched in his arms. Touchdown LSU! With Bill Lobdell holding, Mickal boots the extra point to tie the game.

Yeah there was a fire at the National Personnel Records Center back in the 70's the destroyed a lot of the World War II stuff. I was very fortunate that my grandfather saved all of his paperwork and was able to get his medals replaced easily. It would still be worth a try, however. I had pretty minimum information about my great-grandfather's World War I service and they still re-issued me his Victory Medal. It doesn't cost anything to try. Just be prepared to wait six months or more.

Generally that was the case. The Tech ranks of WWII and the 50s were eventually replaced by the “Specialists” ranks in the 60s. At one point they went from E4 to E9 Specialist…
All Specialist ranks, except E4 Specialist which still exists today, were abolished in, I think, the late 60s or early 70s.
