The 45th is a National Guard division from Oklahoma and the Southwest. During WWII they wore the Thunderbird patch shown above. However, before WWII, they wore this patch…
It has nothing to do with Nazism. It was from the fact a large portion of the division was Native American.

That picture hits home. My Dad fought against Rommel in North Africa. When that ended it was on to Sicily.
Dad was also in on the liberation of Palermo and Rome. That scene in the movie Patton where they liberate Palermo always gets to me.

I’m guessing since he fought in North Africa he wasn’t in the 45th. Sicily was their baptism of fire.

Eugene Sledge, USMC, South Pacific, WWII. Given the nickname “Sledgehammer” by his fellow Marines, he is best known for his iconic WWII book “With the Old Breed” that recounts his wartime experiences fighting with the 1st Marine Division in the PTO during WWII. He first fought at Peleilu and also fought through the Battle of Okinawa. His story was also later told in the HBO series “The Pacific.” On a side note, his son is a very good friend of mine.

I just coincidentally finished reading (last week) the companion book “The Pacific” by Hugh Ambrose to that series.
It’s a good read.

Do you remember in the series how it showed E.B. Sledge writing notes in his little pocket Bible? Those notes were what he used to write his book after the war. His son still has that Bible to this day.

He was on the front page of the evening paper December 8, 1941. He and three others were waiting to join the morning after Pearl Harbor. I often wonder if the other three survived the war.
He spent the duration of the war in the European Theater. When the war ended and the whole German Army surrendered. They went fron fighting men to POW camp guards.
He received a shock from the POWs. A lot of them spoke English. For the entire war the propaganda had been what horrible monsters the German soldiers were. He and his buddies found out that most of the German Army were just regular guys like they were. Farm boys and factory workers and such. Like the American soldiers, they didn't ask for that war. They were just the ones that had to go fight it.
He volunteered for duty in the Pacific Theater, but the war ended before he got shipped over there.
