This is the only existing photo of Chernobyl taken on the morning of the nuclear accident. The heavy grain is caused by massive amounts of radiation that began to destroy the film the second it was exposed. Photo: Igor Kostin

Mount St. Helens Eruption
Richard Lasher, a Boeing employee at the Frederickson Plant, was on his way to ride his dirt bike around Spirit Lake when the mountain erupted in front of him. Original image taken May 18, 1980. (Washington State Archives)
From an article online, by Matthew Singer : "Had Lasher made it to Spirit Lake," Strohl later wrote, "he'd almost certainly have died."
Strohl estimates the photo was taken along the forest roads of Gifford Pinchot National Forest, possibly near the town of Randle. In Cooper's account, Lasher stopped so abruptly he bent the forks of his Yamaha IT Enduro bike. The ash cloud overtook him, but he eventually made it out, and even went back the next day, capturing photos of the devastation, and ended up getting airlifted out and spending the night in jail.

Raquel in London, 1970s, looking forward a lovely dinner of bloody bloaters.
I know, I know, but sometimes you run across an old photo old, artful, pulse perking.

We lived in Baker at the time and we had little black spots on the grass a week or so after the eruption.
