Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader was a Royal Air Force flying ace during the Second World War. He was credited with 22 aerial victories, four shared victories, six probables, one shared probable and 11 enemy aircraft damaged. He had no legs, having lost them as the result of a crash in 1933.
When he was shot down and bailed out over France, the only reason he escaped the cockpit of his fighter was that he was able to tear off one of his legs that was trapped. A German patrol thought his leg was shot off and took him to the hospital, where a doctor rolled up his pant leg and laughed, "The English are so desperate they are sending out one-legged pilots." Bader had the last laugh by tapping his other prosthetic.

Reminded me of this cigar photo. Ford Agency models Lisanne Falk and Brooke Shields lighting up. Another photo from the shoot was published in the first issue of Life Magazine (1978 revival as a monthly). Photo credit: model and aspiring photographer Betsy Cameron.

I got them all except for Janice. I thought she was a man and guessed Van Halen.

The last Krazy Kat Sunday strip, June 25 1944. KK creator George Herriman was a creole from NO whose family moved to L.A. when he was a child in order to pass for white and have better job opportunities.

Buddy Hackett booked – Feb 14, 1968
This might be connected to the time he shot a hole in the car that was parked in his V.I.P. parking spot in front of the Sahara Hotel & Casino.

Hope the caption doesn't bother any of y'all. I just found an old box of Dad's that was full of old photos and neat stuff and thought I'd share the pic with a description of his uncle and his cousin. It was a different country in a different world way back then.
No Sir... I love reading and seeing that stuff... Thanks you for sharing that story of your family... Yes.. It was a different world back then.

In 1939 he joined the Navy and served as GM3C aboard the USS Nevada. On December 7, 1941, he lost his life in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor when a bomb penetrated the deck in front of the forward turret of two 14" main guns he served and exploded below, killing or mortally wounding everyone at that battle station.

C.W. would join the Marine Corps on his 18th birthday in 1943. After boot camp at San Diego, he saw his first combat in the recapture of Guam in 1944. He hopped around several islands and atolls through the remainder of the war but stated the Iwo Jima was the worst thing he had ever been a part of.
So men could be free to play football and complain of oppression, liberals would let drag queens read to their great grandchildren. And then be told that all the problems in this country is because of them... Yes.. I would say it was different back then.

I met Buddy Hackett when he was staying at the Diplomat Hotel in '85 or '86. He wasn't too pleased that, what he thought was the A/C vent/register, wasn't blowing cold air. In fact, it was sucking air in. I had to explain to him the difference between the register and the return grille. By then he was a washed up, has been and the owners didn't give him the VIP treatment.
