A grunt in ‘Nam
That is a photo I’ve never seen before. It looks very realistic. The plastic bottle wedged in the elastic band on the helmet camouflage cover is insect repellent. It was in fact often carried that way. The can opener (“church key”) also in the head band is something that came in all manner of C-Ration/Special Rations packs (SP’s) and was readily available, but I sure don’t think I’d put something that shiny anywhere on my body, much less near my dome. The flash suppressor on the M-16 is the old three prong style that we had in 1969 and it made a great pry bar for getting the metal bands off of ammo, C-ration crates, etc. It doesn’t look like the guy’s wearing any kind of flak jacket, but it could be USMC issue and the camo helmet cover looks like Marine gear. Lastly, grunt or no grunt, that’s a WW2 level combat beard he’s sporting. There were times in ‘68 and ‘69 that you could get to looking almost like that. Anyway, great pic. Hope it is real. Just my two cents.

Kafka, thanks for all the pics, especially this last series. Good job.

That c ration he is eating must have been the sliced ham. It came coated in a greasy slime.
The most popular c ration was the fruit cocktail on really hot days.
The worst was Ham and Lima beans along with the some sort of egg choice.
