Speaking of prunes, I had a dish from the Roman Apicius cook book in a restaurant in Trier, Germany that had the walls covered in Roman artifacts uncovered from the excavation of the building.
It was venison, with prunes and juniper berries as the main flavoring ingredients. Completely unlike anything we eat today, but was delicious. It's also the only time I've eaten prunes and actually enjoyed them.
