My mom would never!
I don't remember any one wearing slippers, but all of the mom's that shopped at the Krogers in Shreve City did the curlers and scarf thing. It was almost like a uniform.
Looking back, the only men you would see at the grocery store on a weekday were the the men that worked there. Other than that it was women and toddlers not old enough for school.

Now that I think about it, it may have been more of a thing related to Kroger shoppers. I seem to remember that was the main grocery store in our town growing up.

I have similar memories. The fuzzy slippers I remember were more like terry cloth. And they were what people now call slides.
The old grandmas and grandma wanna-be women would shuffle their feet, sliding the toes of the slippers across the floor.
There was always a lot of ashy, pink-bottomed feet sliding across the grocery store floor.

Yes, because the fine upstanding women that shopped at the A&P and Brookshires would never go to the store with curlers in their hair.
